Step 5 – Personnel Licensing

Training, testing and further education of personnel is a crucial element of licensing of personnel working in rail operations, performed according to defined criteria.

Personnel training by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG

All personnel carrying out operations on the ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG network are trained and tested and undergo further training in accordance with the provisions of the relevant directives. Deployment of such personnel requires operational experience within a safety-critical environment in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Paragraph 62 (Arbeitnehmerschutzgesetz § 62). ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG is responsible for training operational personnel.

Recognition of foreign training

The BMK is responsible for recognition of foreign training and for specification of further Austrian training courses for locomotive drivers. Some steps can be performed in parallel in order to save time (e.g. applications to the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) for vehicle licensing and network compatibility testing by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG).
