Target network 2040 - The rail network of the future

The target network 2040 is the central, long-term strategy of the federal government for the expansion of the Austrian rail network. From 2024, it will succeed the currently valid target network 2025+. The target network 2040 is an important element for achieving the ambitious goals for the climate-neutral realignment of the mobility sector.

Traction current – green energy

Hydropower is an economical and environmentally friendly source of energy. We invest in our power stations and in a reliable and fail-safe infrastructure.

Freight centres and terminals – linking road and rail

ÖBB-Infrastruktur capitalises on the powerful and efficient transshipment of goods for the loading industry. With investments in modern facilities like the construction of the new Vienna South Freight Centre and the upgrade of the Wolfurt Freight Centre, we are increasing capacities for the market and accelerating processing times.

Our railway stations are hubs of mobility

We want to impress you with an attractive offer. Modern, accessible railway stations, electronic passenger information, Park&Ride facilities, shops and even more. We are investing in our railway stations and raising them to a whole new level of comfort and convenience.

Regional railways – Reshaping Austria

In the coming years, around 1.8 billion euros will be invested in the further expansion and modernisation of regional railways. The regional network is to be modernised, expanded and made more environmentally friendly.

Real estate development

We offer the space to redesign the future of cities! Through the merger of ÖBB locations and the modernisation of railway operations, large areas within cities as well as in rural areas are being released for new purposes. Our fully consolidated subsidiary ÖBB-Immobilienmanagement GmbH offers all services in the area of project development. (German)
