Traffic controller at work

Safe travel, safe network

It's not just at the station that we do our best to make you feel safe. We ensure safe and reliable railway operations. Our responsibilities range from the provision of safe facilities to operational management and intensive cooperation with public safety organisations.

Safe travel

You can travel safely and reliably on the entire ÖBB-Infrastruktur network. This also applies to the railway stations, where we are always concerned about your safety. The well-trained security staff and the top infrastructure of ÖBB-Operative Services guarantee protection and safety and ensure a pleasant stay at the stations. Please also note our house rules.

Safety at work

ÖBB-Infrastruktur is responsible for a rail network about 5,000 kilometres in length. Every day we undertake a vast range of work on the tracks, sometimes during normal operation in order to modernise and maintain our railway. Safety is our highest priority in this area. Our safety at work policy is designed to reduce accidents and the consequences of accidents.

Safe network

Safe facilities are the basic prerequisites for safe rail traffic. The Network Status Report awards ÖBB-Infrastruktur a high status in all areas. ÖBB-Infrastruktur ensures precision maintenance of rails, switches, bridges and tunnels, sound control, safety and electronic technology, reliable telecom and protection systems, modern buildings, platforms and much more. In addition, we invest in, maintain and inspect our infrastructure. Our professional incident management operates for you round the clock if required. Forests protect the rail network from avalanches, rock slides and other natural hazards. Where there is no forest protection, we build structures to protect you. These include protective barriers, rock fall protection nets and rock consolidation systems.

Modern operational management

The requirements for the technical systems are high. With our investment in a modern systems landscape and our well-trained specialists, we have created the prerequisites for economic and efficient signalling and control management, providing high standards of safety and reliability.

On average, every twelve seconds a train sets off across the approximately 5,000 kilometres of track, which makes up the rail network of ÖBB-Infrastruktur. Annually some 150 million train kilometres are covered by train operators on the network - equivalent to ten journeys around the world, everyday. The aim of ÖBB-Infrastruktur is to provide safe and reliable movement of rail traffic, at low operational costs.

High sophisticated systems monitor and control the safe operation of trains and shunting and provide up-to-date customer information at railway stations. With the recent generation of electronic signalling systems and remote control technology, it is possible to concentrate the scheduling, managing and controlling of rail transport in larger control centres. This allows us to establish the necessary conditions, for efficient and reliable rail network management, with a high level of safety.

In Vienna, in the nationwide traffic management centre we bring together the network wide coordination of the train services. Operational control of the railways is provided through five operational control centres in Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg, Villach and Vienna. More than 3,000 kilometres of tracks will be controlled in the future. This will ensure optimised tuning of workflows with short lines of communication, even when operating variances occur. Both, passenger and freight traffic customers benefit from the effective management organisation.

Modern management systems support our staff in their day-to-day business processes. This ensures even greater safety, punctuality and quality - creating environmentally friendly and cost-effective mobility and logistic services in rail operations that are constantly becoming denser and faster.
