Historically and economically significant
The Karawanks tunnel, which is about eight kilometres long, is the heart of the freight transport corridor from Carinthia to the Adriatic ports of Koper and Rijeka and the Austrian and southern German economic areas. From autumn 2020, we will renovate and modernise the more than 100-year-old tunnel.
In 1906, the almost eight-kilometre-long railroad tunnel was put into operation for the first time. In order to bring the route to a modern safety level, the tunnel will be extensively renovated and upgraded by September 2021. Austria and Slovenia are working hand in hand on this project.
In order for the tunnel to meet modern safety standards, the double-track line will be reduced to one track. In this way, important safety systems can be installed on the existing tunnel profile. These include continuous escape routes, modern fire protection measures and fail-safe communication systems.
- Provision of a modern freight corridor for future needs
- Improvement of operational safety
- Increase of passage speed
- State of the art single-track railroad tunnel
