Train running checkpoint

Train running checkpoints are infrastructure-based train monitoring systems. They enhance rail safety by detecting critical train defects by using various sensors. Identified deviations lead to operational measures helping to avoid accidents and serious damage. The collected measurement improves fleet and maintenance management.

Details of the service

Data from e.g. hotbox detection & wheel impact and load detection systems are provided to interested railway operators. The standard measuring equipment can be adapted to customers´s needs. Current data products are described in the ÖBB Infra network statement.

  • Derailment Detection

Detection of derailed wheel towards the center of the track

  • Dragging Equipment Detection

Detection of parts hanging off the train that could damage equipment on the track

  • Hot Box and Hot Wheel Detection

Alerting when increased temperatures of axle bearings or brakes appear

  • Wheel Impact and Load Detection

Alerting in the event of axle load overrunsand flat spots (measurment in the area of the wheel-rail contact)

  • Profile Validation System

Measurement of objects that harming the cross-section profile of the train (measurement exceeding the train profile)

  • Vehicle regocnition

Wheel-accurate  data assignment for RFID-tagged vehicles

Facts & figures

  • 40 train running checkpoints with multiple sensors are located at serval border entries, major junctions, and critical points.
  • In addition, ther are over 170 hotbox detection systems every 30–50 km on the ÖBB-Infrastructure network.
  • Further checkpoints will be added as part of line upgrades and new construction projects.
  • To date, already almost 8 million data sets have been analyzed.
  • Of the 44,000 anomalies detected, 12,000 had an operational impact.
