Passengers benefit all along the line

Greater comfort, better frequency and shorter travel times: Two modernization packages promise commuters noticeable improvements on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn. Realisierungszeitraum 2024-2033.

Franz-Josefs-Bahn enters a new rail age

The completion of the modernization measures on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn (2028) and the commissioning of the Horn direct connection (2033) will result in noticeable improvements:

  • Between Vienna and Gmünd, the expansion of the infrastructure will enable a continuous hourly service or a half-hourly service during rush hour.
  • Commuters can look forward to shorter travel times and more connections compared to the status quo.
  • For the first time, there is a fast direct connection from Horn to Vienna.

Modernization packages in detail

Package 1: Implementation period 2024 to the end of 2028

The existing line between Gmünd and Vienna will be extensively modernized in the coming years. The measures include the adaptation of the superstructure, substructure and overhead lines in individual sections.

The stations at Großweikersdorf, Ziersdorf, Limberg-Maissau, Eggenburg and Sigmundsherberg will be modernized in stages from 2024 to 2028 and equipped with electronic interlockings.

The maximum line speed will be increased to 160 km/h on certain sections (expected from the end of 2028).

Railroad crossings will be technically secured or, if possible, abandoned.

Package 2: Implementation period 2028 to after 2033

A partially new and electrified line will provide the district capital Horn with an attractive connection to Vienna for the first time without having to change trains (direct connection Horn, commissioning in 2031 depending on the progress of the official procedure).

So that trains can meet without reducing speed and capacity can be increased, the line is expected to be upgraded to double track on sections north of Absdorf-Hippersdorf (2.5 km) and east of Irnfritz (4 km) by mid-2033.

The track position at Hötzelsdorf-Geras station will be adapted to allow trains to enter and exit more quickly.
