B&R-Überdachung Gmünd

Bike&Ride roofing Gmünd

Since 2019, photovoltaic modules, as an integrated roof element, have been generating 100 % green electricity from renewable energy in Gmünd.

ÖBB is working on various projects for the use of photovoltaics in the company. For example, the first Bike&Ride facility with a photovoltaic roof was built at Gmünd railway station.

System design

The system was built in modular construction and consists of a basic module and two extension modules. The overall dimensions are approximately 16m x 4m. An enlargement in 1m steps in longitudinal direction is possible at any time - this way, such plants are easily adaptable to the respective existing localities.

About construction

The construction of the roof is reminiscent of railway platform roofs. It consists of 32 highly effective bifacial glass/glass photovoltaic modules, which allow the use of solar energy even on the inner side from all possible reflections. The modules mentioned are used as construction elements, which creates a double added value: on the one hand by generating electricity and on the other hand by making climate protection measures visible to customers.

The system has an installed capacity of around 9.6 kWp and is expected to generate an annual yield of around 11,520 kWh. The electricity generated will be used to supply the station with energy. However, it can also be utilised for charging e-bikes or e-scooters - a charging option can be optionally implemented.

Remote monitoring of the system and performance monitoring is planned via app. In the evening and at night, the system is illuminated by energy-saving downlights using LED technology.
