Significant infrastructure project

The Koralm Railway is part of the new Southern Line in Austria and one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Europe. It comprises 130 kilometres of new track, including 50 kilometres of tunnels, over 100 bridges, and 23 modern stations and stops. The line provides a fast and safe connection between the federal states of Styria and Carinthia, and strengthens the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor.

Full operation from December 2025

The 130-kilometre-long double-track high-performance railway line is designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h. Detailed planning began in 1995, with initial construction works starting in 1999. Construction of the Koralm tunnel began in 2008, and the final breakthrough was achieved in 2020. Final measurements and test runs are currently underway. Full commissioning is planned with the 2026 timetable.

Sixth longest railway tunnel in the world

The Koralm Tunnel between Styria and Carinthia is around 33 kilometres long and has a maximum gradient of just 5.4 ‰. It is the sixth longest railway tunnel in the world. At a maximum depth of 1.2 kilometres, two parallel tunnel tubes, which meet the latest technical requirements, pierce the Koralpe mountain massif.

Graz-Klagenfurt in 45 minutes

The fastest journey time between Graz and Klagenfurt will be reduced from three hours to just 45 minutes. Travel time from Graz to Venice will be cut by up to four hours. Freight transport will also benefit from improved connections towards Vienna and the Villach South Terminal. The "Koralmbahn" (Koralm Railway) links the region with emerging economic areas across Europe and provides rapid access to major seaports on both the Adriatic and the Baltic Seas.
