A pioneer in sustainability

Society, economy and ecology. For us sustainability means capacity for the future by achieving a fair balance between economic, ecological and social objectives.

We are creating the prerequisites for future-oriented mobility

Sustainability is an inherent part of our corporate purpose: construction and operation of infrastructure for future generations. The high social, economic and of course, ecological sustainability of rail as a transport infrastructure is a decisive contribution to the sustainable development of Austria.

ESG Rating ÖBB-Infrastruktur

In order to continue meeting the requirements of customers and society in the future, ÖBB is taking further steps towards an efficient, non-discriminatory and environmentally friendly railway infrastructure with its expansion strategy "Target Network 2025+" as well as the work already started on the "Target Network 2040" - a basis for more trains, more passengers, more goods and better intervals on the unrivalled sustainable railway. The leading role of ÖBB Infrastruktur, in terms of sustainable mobility, is also repeatedly confirmed by achieving prime status by the external independent body in sustainability rating, the internationally leading ESG rating agency, ISS.

As an ESG rating agency, ISS is a specialist in the independent analysis and evaluation of ecological and social performance of companies that raise money from the capital market to finance projects. ISS ESG provides investors with comprehensive ratings so that they can make their investment decisions under strict sustainability considerations.

The most recent rating of transport infrastructure companies from Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia was carried out in 2020, with ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG being rated as a top investment for ethical, ecological and socially responsible investments for the fourth time.

Sustainability Management at ÖBB Infrastructure

Our sustainability strategy sets out our sustainability ambitions for the coming years. ÖBB Infrastructure’s annual sustainability report (or non-financial statement) discloses detailed information on our goals, measures and progress in the areas of environment, social issues and corporate governance (ESG). The report includes, among other things, key figures and facts on climate protection and energy, adaptation to climate change, biodiversity, the circular economy, social responsibility and governance. In this way, we provide a sound basis for all stakeholders to understand and assess our sustainability performance.

Sustainable projects for a future worth living

We are implementing a wide range of projects to fulfil our responsibility towards the environment and society, and we are enabling sustainable mobility through investment in and the operation of rail infrastructure. Further information on the various topics can be viewed here.

  • Climate change and energy

A key pillar of our sustainability strategy is climate protection and energy supply, with the aim of achieving climate neutrality (Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions) by 2035 (net zero). The ÖBB Group as a whole is set to become climate neutral (net zero) by 2050. Our track electrification projects, improvements in energy efficiency, the decarbonisation of buildings and operational facilities, and the transition to electric mobility (rail and road) are all contributing to the reduction of emissions.

Since 2018, the ÖBB Group has been using only traction power from 100% renewable energy sources such as water, sun and wind. Similarly, from 2019 onwards, the three-phase power supply to all stations, offices, workshops and other operational facilities was also switched to electricity from 100% renewable energy sources. The expansion of our renewable energy generation helps reduce our dependence on third parties and strengthen our resilience. Any green electricity we do not produce ourselves is purchased and also comes from 100% renewable energy sources.

  • Adaptation to climate change

For years, we have been pursuing a holistic approach to climate change adaptation, ranging from research projects to the practical implementation of various preventive measures. Research projects, such as those on climate change adaptation in rail transport, provide essential insights for the development of targeted adaptation measures. Operational measures, such as climate-resilient protective forests and rockfall protection, are based both on the latest research findings and on many years of experience in dealing with natural hazards. Overarching climate risk analyses also provide valuable information for the continuous monitoring and management of climate risks. In this way, we ensure that rail remains a safe and reliable mode of transport even under changing climatic conditions.

  • Railways and nature

We are committed to preserving biodiversity and manage our land along the railway lines as vital habitats and refuges for many plants and animals. This ranges from specific initiatives such as the ÖBB Rail Bees, through the planting of native and site-appropriate plant species, to the creation of biodiversity islands and replacement habitats. In addition, we continuously implement species conservation measures, such as the installation of crossing aids for wildlife and small animals, or the fitting of bird protection caps on power lines. We are also committed to reducing the use of chemical plant protection products in vegetation control to protect the environment and public health.

  • Circular economy

Another key pillar of our approach is the consistent promotion of the circular economy. We consider the entire life cycle of our facilities and prioritise resource efficiency in the construction and maintenance of infrastructure. To reduce the demand for primary raw materials, materials such as track ballast and steel rails are processed and recycled. We also contribute to the circular economy through sustainable procurement, for example of recycled packaging materials.

  • Social responsibility

We are equally committed to our social responsibility. The safety of our passengers and staff forms the foundation of everything we do. As one of the country’s largest employers, we are actively committed to our staff and promote equal opportunities, diversity and a healthy work-life balance. In nine modern training workshops, we train the next generation of talent in future-oriented professions such as electrical engineering, mechatronics and track construction. In doing so, we not only ensure technical excellence for stable rail operations, but also offer young people crisis-proof prospects in climate-friendly mobility. At the same time, we focus on targeted support for women through mentoring programmes or the ‘Women & Girls in Technology’ initiative, with the aim of sustainably increasing the proportion of female specialists in technical fields and putting genuine equality of opportunity into practice. This commitment has been recognised; for example, in 2025 we were named the most family-friendly public-sector company, and in 2024 we received the Minerva Award as a Diversity Leader and Top Female Workplace.

In addition, as part of our social responsibility, we are implementing effective measures for local residents and passengers. For instance, we are consistently investing in noise protection – including refurbishments to existing infrastructure and the incorporation of noise barriers and insulation on new and upgraded lines. Furthermore, we are enhancing safety and inclusion, for example by securing level crossings and implementing ongoing measures to improve accessibility at stations.
