Telematics TSI and train path request

Train path request on the European rail network is standardized and digitized through the Telematics TSI. The objective is to ensure that data exchange between railway undertakings (RUs) and infrastructure managers (IMs), such as ÖBB INFRA, is consistent, efficient, and interoperable.

Consistent data and clear identification

The Telematics TSI defines how path requests are submitted, processed, and confirmed electronically. All process steps are clearly structured as follows:

  • Path Request
  • Review and coordination by the infrastructure manager
  • Allocation or rejection of the path
  • Ongoing updates (e.g., changes, cancellations)

These processes are harmonized across Europe and follow standardized message formats and procedures. Standardized object identifiers are used to ensure unambiguous communication, such as train identification, route (route + path), or train path request. These unique identifiers ensure that all parties involved are referring to the same object at all times. This significantly simplifies cross-border traffic and makes it more efficient.

Standardized Interfaces

Communication takes place via the so-called Common Interface (CI), a mandatory technical interface for all participants in the European rail network. For stakeholders who wish to place orders without using the interface, the existing online ordering system M-AMA is available.
The standardized interface provides rail carriers and other market participants with uniform message formats, secure data transmission (signing, encryption), automated processing, and efficient interoperability between different IT systems.

Your benefits

  • The Telematics TSI enables a standardized, end-to-end digital process chain—from planning to operation. This improves predictability and enhances the quality of rail transport by:

    • Faster and standardized train path order
    • Transparent processes and feedback
    • Reduced interface complexity
    • Improved international cooperation
    • Contribution to European integration
