What does train preparation involve?
The Telematics TSI provides all the data necessary for safe and efficient train operations:
- Train Composition: Contains all relevant information about the train, such as rolling stock, car order, lengths, weights, and, if applicable, information on dangerous goods. This data is critical for operational planning, capacity utilization, and safety.
- "Train Ready" message: Confirmation by the railway undertaking that the train is operationally and technically ready to depart and meets the requirements of the assigned train path.
This information is exchanged in a structured manner between railway undertakings and infrastructure managers and forms the basis for train operations. Train preparation is closely linked to the previously booked train path, for example, by comparing the planned train path with the actual train configuration and ensuring that the train meets infrastructure requirements (e.g., length, load, and route restrictions) and that only fully prepared and compatible trains enter service.
Standardized digital processes
The Telematics TSI ensures that all parties involved use the same data formats and workflows. This
- improves data quality,
- reduces the need for manual coordination,
- and enables process automation.
A key component of train preparation is the quality of the data provided. The TSI defines clear requirements for completeness, timeliness, consistency, and accuracy to ensure smooth and safe operations.
