Train Running Checkpoints

Intelligent detection systems between safety and maintenance. Every train journey generates valuable insights into the technical health of the vehicle. When analyzing around 8 million data records for workplace safety, 36,000 irregularities were found.

What are train running checkpoints?

  • Train running checkpoints are infrastructure-based train monitoring systems.
  • They enhance rail safety by detecting critical train defects using various sensors.
  •  Identified deviations lead to operational measures helping to avoid accidents and serious damage.
  • The collected measurement data is also made available to improve fleet and maintenance management.

Where are train running checkpoints?

  • 40 train running checkpoints with multiple sensors are located at several border crossings, major junctions, and critical points
  • In addition, over 170 hotbox detection systems every 30–50 km on the ÖBB-Infrastructure network
  •  Further checkpoints will be added as part of line upgrades and new construction projects.

Almost 8 Million analysed data sets

  •  7.95 Mio. crossings recorded

74 Railway undertakings registered at ZLCP

     36.000 anomalies detected

11.000 of which with operational effects

Details about data recording

  • Derailment Detection
Detection of derailed wheel towards the center of the track
    Dragging Equipment Detection
Detection of parts hanging off the train that could damage
    equipment on the track
Hot Box and Hot Wheel Detection
Alerting when increased temperatures of axle bearings or
    brakes appear
    Wheel Impact and Load Detection
Alerting in the event of axle load overruns and flat spots
(measurement in the area of the wheel-rail contact)
    Profile Validation System
Measurement of objects that affect the cross-section profile of
the train (measurement exceeding the train profile)
    Vehicle Recognition
Wheel-accurate data assignment for RFID-tagged vehicles

Current developments as future offerings for our customers

  • Data for Wagon Owners/Vehicle Keepers: Provision of ZLCP-data also for Wagon Owners/Vehicle Keepers
  • Wheel Profile Measurement Systems: Installation of 10 Systems on 5 existing double track Checkpoints. Data for interested customers via cost-covering data product
  • Wheel Defect Dashboard: All data with information on wheel defects compiled clearly in a dashboard. This allows setting individual thresholds, reducing damage, and decreasing rejections at ZLCPs due to wheel defects.
