Rail power from water, sun and wind
ÖBB INFRA has relied entirely on 100 % traction power from renewable energy sources. Since 2019, buildings and other operational facilities have also been powered by that kind of energy:
- The world’s first agrivoltaic plant for traction power in Thalsdorf supplies 100 % traction electricity equivalent to 4,000 Railjet journeys from Villach to Vienna. It also provides shade for 6,000 hens and 60 sheep.
- 9 ÖBB INFRA-owned power plants, more than 140 PV systems, 60% self-generated renewable electricity for the rail system
- Since 2022, ÖBB INFRA has operated the world’s first wind turbine producing traction power.

Bird protection along power lines
- bird protection caps on overhead line masts and markers on power lines, particularly along migratory bird routes
Wildlife bridge
- bridges create safe crossings over railway lines
- they help connect habitats and preserve wildlife populations
Rethinking old railway areas
Old railway areas create space for nature

Breitenlee
- 90 hectares of natural habitat are being created on the site of a former marshalling yard
- The project promotes renaturation and biodiversity.

Gesäuse National Park
- With the support of ÖBB INFRA, the Styrian national park is being expanded by around 113 hectares.
- The aim is to ecologically connect existing nature conservation areas and secure them for the long term.
