All about the building

The redevelopment of Bregenz Train Station is taking place in several phases. The Hypo underpass and the temporary station building have been completed. Work is now underway on a forward-looking transport hub as part of the ‘Bregenz Mitte’ urban development project, in collaboration with the City of Bregenz and the State of Vorarlberg.

Bregenz railway station underpass

Phase 1: New Hypo underpass at Bregenz railway station

Modern, accessible and in keeping with the times, the new Hypo underpass conveniently connects the town, the lake and the railway. It is not only a key access point to the platforms, but also a popular link between the town centre and the Lake Constance promenade.
With modern, oversized lifts, new staircases and a green roof, an attractive, accessible space for mobility has been created – whether on foot, by bike or by train.

An adjacent new services building with a timber façade is constructed from climate-neutral concrete, thereby permanently sequestering 7,000 tonnes of CO₂.

Phase 2: A new, modern temporary building

In record time, a bright, welcoming timber-framed building was erected in front of the old Bregenz railway station. Ticket offices, a travel centre, a waiting area and modern toilet facilities ensure contemporary comfort. New escalators significantly improve access to the platforms.

The project was completed in just ten months, from planning to opening. As well as service areas for passengers, the three-storey building also offers modern workspaces for staff from ÖBB, Postbus and the Vorarlberg Transport Association (VVV).

Phase 3: Bregenz Mitte Neighbourhood Development

"Bregenz Mitte" is one of the provincial capital’s key projects for the future. The Province of Vorarlberg, the City of Bregenz, ÖBB and landowners are working together to redevelop the entire railway station area and transform it into a modern, vibrant neighbourhood.

Following several rounds of consultation, a joint interim agreement has been reached in the planning process. Key aspects, such as the possible relocation of the regional road, future transport flows and urban planning guidelines, have been further refined and harmonised. The basis remains ‘Station Variant 4a’, presented in 2024 by the architectural practice VlayStreeruwitz, which envisages, amongst other things, the relocation of the L202 to run parallel to the railway line and the construction of a new station at the existing site (temporary building). Traffic simulations and studies on street space design provide the first reliable planning foundations.

Plans also include a continuous cycle path running parallel to the railway line between Quellenstraße and the ‘Hafen’ stop, to relieve pressure on the pedestrian zone in future. An overarching land-use concept, as well as measures for local mobility and access from the lake side, are also being developed. The next steps will involve preparing discussions with landowners to lay the groundwork for future infrastructure measures.
