Three stages in the modernisation of Bregenz Train Station

The modernisation of Bregenz Train Station is taking place in three stages. Step by step, a modern and well-connected transport hub is taking shape here.

  • Stage 1: The first major milestone was reached with the new Hypo underpass and the extended platforms. It connects the town, the lake and the railway in an accessible and convenient way.
  • Phase 2: The temporary station building offers modern service areas for passengers and staff and will remain in operation until the new station is completed.
  • Phase 3: The comprehensive redevelopment of the entire station area as part of the Bregenz Mitte urban regeneration project.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why was a temporary building constructed?

The existing station no longer meets current technical and structural standards. A new building had originally been planned for as early as 2025, but developments arising from the ‘Bregenz Mitte’ urban regeneration project have made it necessary to redesign the station. The temporary building will serve as a stopgap until the new Bregenz station is built.

  • Why is the old station building still standing and not being demolished straight away?

The existing station building is no longer owned by ÖBB, so the company has no say in when it will be demolished.

  • How long will the temporary station building remain in use?

The temporary station building is intended to be used for the entire duration of the station’s refurbishment. It will remain in use until the new station is completed. The main construction work is scheduled to begin in the early 2030s. The temporary station building will only be removed once the new station building has been completed. This means it will be in use for 7–10 years.

  • Will the temporary building be dismantled once the new station is completed?

Yes. The temporary building is designed as a stopgap solution. As soon as the new station is operational, it will no longer be needed and can be dismantled.

  • Why was money invested in a temporary facility?

The alternative building is more than just a temporary facility: it offers modern, accessible service areas and attractive workspaces. In this way, ÖBB is ensuring that passengers and staff enjoy the best possible conditions throughout the construction period.
