Accessible railway station in the Tyrolean Oberland
ÖBB is carrying out a comprehensive modernisation of Schönwies station, transforming it into a modern, accessible transport hub in the Tyrolean Oberland by the end of 2027. In collaboration with the Province of Tyrol and the municipality of Schönwies, an infrastructure is being developed that is adapted to current requirements, facilitates the use of public transport and improves the experience and access for travellers through specific measures such as lifts, new waiting areas and modern passenger information systems.
Due to its age, the existing station no longer meets today’s requirements. The entire facility is therefore being refurbished and brought up to current standards.
At the heart of the project is a new pedestrian underpass with lifts, which will provide step-free access to all platforms in future. The facility is complemented by a new island platform, modern information systems and weather-protected waiting areas. Bike-and-ride and park-and-ride facilities are also being expanded, and the station forecourt is being redesigned.
Most of the refurbishment will take place whilst rail services continue to operate. This means the region will remain connected to the rail network throughout the construction period, as far as the construction schedule permits.
