Modernisation on track
The modernisation of the Radkersburg Railway will make the regional line more attractive, future-proof and sustainable. The aim is to significantly improve public transport and to prepare it for future requirements.
Many advantages for rail customers
By 2032, shorter journey times and more attractive connections between Graz, the Radkersburg region and Maribor will be possible. In concrete terms, passengers will be able to travel from Graz to Bad Radkersburg in less than an hour. The journey time between Spielfeld and Bad Radkersburg will be reduced by around 13 minutes. This is made possible by a series of measures. Among them are the speed increase up to 120 km/h and the elimination of 38 railway crossings. In addition, the prerequisites for fast direct trains between Graz and Bad Radkersburg are being created.
Your benefits
-
- Modernisation in two construction phases
- Electrification of 30 km of track
- Elimination of 38 railway crossings
- Increase in speed
- Significant extension of the current train service
- Better connections to Spielfeld-Straß, Leibnitz and Graz
- Savings of 540,000 litres of diesel and 2,000 tonnes of CO2 per year
As of 2035: faster and even more environmentally friendly
In a second modernisation phase, the electrification of the regional railway is also planned (in technical dependence on the extension between Werndorf and Spielfeld). This will result in an even shorter journey time, an increase in speed reaching up to 160 km/h and a possible tripling of the train service. And the environment also breathes a sigh of relief: Electrification of the 30 km long line will save 540,000 litres of diesel and 2,000 tonnes of CO2 per year in the future.
In the coming years, mainly refurbishments, track realignments and ballast bed renewals will be carried out. Finally, the main works are planned from 2029. The main works of the second phase are scheduled from 2033 to 2035.
