ETCS train control

Standards have been put in place throughout the EU to harmonise train control and train signalling systems. Together, the ETCS train control system, GSM-R rail radio and parts of the uniform TSI (technical specifications for interoperability) regulations form the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS)

ETCS level 2

The use of different train control systems is an obstacle to cross-border transport and constitutes a significant barrier for the railways and for the economy within the context of the single European market. Consequently, the European Union wishes to standardise and liberalise rail transport in Europe with the aim of facilitating interoperable and efficient cross-border rail transport for all RUs (railway undertakings). ÖBB-Infrastruktur is therefore investing in the ETCS train control system.

ETCS extension

ÖBB-Infrastruktur is expanding the ETCS network to 3,700 kilometers of ETCS Level 2 in three implementation phases. Here you will find an overview of the planning and the resulting equipment issues for your vehicle fleet. The expansion strategy provides for ETCS-only operation in stages up to 2038.

ETCS Key Management

For journeys on ETCS Level 2 lines of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, digital cryptographic keys (ETCS keys) are required for data exchange between ETCS track-side centres (Radio Block Centre, RBC) and ETCS on-board units (OBU).
