Austria’s first “BahnhofCity”
It took three years to remodel Vienna Westbahnhof while operations continued. The modernised train station was opened in November 2011 together with the new “BahnhofCity Wien West”. The heritage-listed station hall from the 1950s was generally refurbished and new buildings were constructed adjacent to the hall, one on the left and one on the right. An additional level was introduced below the resulting complex of buildings. Today, the three levels accommodate the station hall with the related service facilities as well as an extensive shopping mall including a range of different dining options. The new station is supplemented with a service centre including hotels and offices.
More than a railway station
The Vienna Westbahnhof is thus more than a modern railway station: It combines travel, shopping, work and living. An architectural eye-catcher of the office building is the so-called “Wolkenspange”, the symbol of BahnhofCity Vienna West, which is visible from afar. With 430 tonnes, the imposing steel structure weighs as much as the Giant Ferris Wheel.
