Karawanks Tunnel

The Karawanks Tunnel has been in operation since 1906. Its modernisation brings more safety and efficiency in operation. Goods reach their destination more quickly.

Historically and economically significant

The Karawanks Tunnel, which is about eight kilometres long, is the heart of the freight transport corridor from Carinthia to the Adriatic ports of Koper and Rijeka and the Austrian and southern German economic areas. In 1906, the almost eight-kilometre-long railway tunnel was put into operation for the first time.

In order to bring the route to a modern safety level, we have renovated and modernised the tunnel, which is more than 100 years old. Austria and Slovenia worked hand in hand on this project.

More safety

In order for the tunnel to meet modern safety standards, the double-track line was reduced to one track. In doing so, it was possible to install important safety systems such as continuous escape routes, modern fire protection measures and fail-safe communication systems in the existing tunnel profile.
