Upgrade Köstendorf – Salzburg

The new section between Köstendorf and Salzburg is set to become another milestone in the history of the Western Line.

Just as extensive, therefore, are the preliminary work and planning effort. Now the ministry for transport, innovation and technology  is verifying the project in the environmental compatibility test (UVP).

Through the Flachgau in a tunnel

The railway line in the Flachgau area is over 150 years old and only permits relatively slow speeds. This is set to change in the future. Where the line currently turns through a bend towards Wallersee at Köstendorf, the new line will carry straight on and run beneath the municipal area of Köstendorf, Schleedorf, Seekirchen, Elixhausen and Hallwang in two single-tube tunnels. The two lines come together again in Kasern.

This route, selected in close coordination with the province, the municipalities and the affected population, is now being subjected to a UVP, which should result in UVP notification and approval of the route.
